Monica Seles Is Working on Memoir
Former tennis great Monica Seles is working on a memoir.
She said in a statement Wednesday that she hopes “to share how I found balance, strength and happiness in my life after a rollercoaster ride of exhilarating accomplishment and sometimes overwhelming tragedy”
The book, currently untitled, will be published in 2009 by Avery, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA).
Seles, 34, won nine Grand Slam tournaments and as a teenager was the top-ranked women’s player for three years, in the early 1990s. But she is also known for one of the sport’s most bizarre and terrifying incidents: In April 1993, at a tournament in Hamburg, Germany, she was stabbed in the back by a man who climbed out of the stands.
Seles returned to the game 27 months later and immediately reached the 1995 U.S. Open final. Her final Grand Slam title then came at the 1996 Australian Open. She did reach two more major finals but was hampered by a left foot injury. Her last match was a first-round loss at the 2003 French Open. She officially retired last month.
Seles, who has struggled with weight problems, is currently a contestant on the hit ABC series “Dancing With the Stars.”
“After years of having every aspect of her training, diet and life dictated and scrutinized by others, Monica took control, deciding what she wanted from life and set out to obtain it,” her publisher, Avery, said in a statement.
“Cutting through the fog of sadness, fear and frustration that made Seles overweight and unhappy, today she looks and feels better than ever and has created a life in balance.”

Grateful Dead to reunite for Obama concert
The Grateful Dead, the San Francisco cult rock band that has played at political events since the 1960s, will reunite on Monday for the first time in four years to rally support for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, a spokesman said on Friday.
Band leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995. Surviving members have played together occasionally since then, most recently in 2004. On Monday, original members Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir will play at a San Francisco theater a day before California’s primary.
“They have agreed to reunite for this one-time-only event in order to lend support to Senator Obama leading into the crucial ‘Super-Tuesday’ series of primaries held on Tuesday, February 5th,” the band said in a statement.
The band gained fame with its free-form psychedelic music when the counterculture movement flourished in San Francisco in the 1960s, and they attracted many loyal fans who came to be known as “Deadheads.”

Their musical influences varied widely, and in concert or on record album one can hear psychedelic rock (in the late sixties), the blues, rock nuggets, country-western, bluegrass, country-rock, and although they rarely played jazz music, the band certainly borrowed for their music the kind of long improvisatory sequences that jazz artists such as Charles Mingus and John Coltrane perfected in the 1950s. These various influences were distilled into a diverse and psychedelic whole that made the Grateful Dead “the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world.”
Led Zeppelin concert off until at least September
British rock band Led Zeppelin enjoyed jamming together again last year in a charity concert but won’t have another session before September at the earliest, lead guitarist Jimmy Page said in Tokyo on Monday.
A successful reunion show in London in December rekindled hopes of a world tour, but Page said that singer Robert Plant’s tour with U.S. country singer Alison Krauss is keeping him busy for now.
“I can assure you the amount of work that we put into the O2 (concert), for ourselves rehearsing and the staging of it, was probably what you put into a world tour,” Page said.
But, “Robert Plant also had a parallel project running and he’s really busy with that project, certainly until September, so I can’t give you any news.”
Page, in Tokyo to promote a greatest hits release, painted a happy picture of the reunion.
“It was exhilarating, fantastic, every week was a week to look forward to,” he said. “We did the show and it was great.”
The band, formed in 1968 by Page, Plant, bass guitarist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, became arguably the world’s biggest rock group by the early 1970s.
Their fourth album, released in 1971, included their most famous song, “Stairway to Heaven,” while the band has sold an estimated 300 million albums worldwide.
The group decided to break up shortly after Bonham died in September 1980, although Page and Plant collaborated at times over the years.
Plant, Page and Jones performed together in London before about 20,000 fans on December 10, with Bonham’s son Jason on the drums.
When the concert was announced, the Internet site selling tickets crashed with applications, while the possibility of a new world tour had fans around the globe excited.
Page said after many years the song indeed remained the same.
“That is what was so thrilling really — to come together after all this time and find that there was so much chemistry and so much electricity involved in these four characters.”

Roger Federer finds a way to chalk out victory
SWISS ace Roger Federer was last night pushed to the brink of the biggest upset in his dominant reign, forced into a pulsating five-set epic against Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.
Federer outlasted the gritty Serb 10-8 in the deciding set but the lack-lustre performance has cast doubts on his campaign for a third consecutive Australian Open title.
Tipsarevic was on the verge of turning giant-killer deep into a marathon 78-minute decider after snaring the first and third sets.
Then finally, Federer broke his opponent’s nerve in a 4hr 27min thriller to win 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.
A pair of netted forehands in Tipsarevic’s ninth service game gave Federer the crucial break, and he nervelessly served out to win through to the fourth round.
Tipsarevic has notched only one win over a top-10 player and was better known for his tattoo-covered body, distinctive wrap-around glasses and love of Nietzsche and Dostoevsky.
But in a stunning five-set contest, he threw aside that reputation in a punishing street-fight with the game’s foremost artist.
“What a great battle. Clearly somebody has to win, but I wish we could have draws as well,” Federer said after the win.
“It’s not such a relief, it’s more happiness. I am happy I could deliver a five-set thriller. I don’t have them often, except at Wimbledon against (Rafael) Nadal, so it’s nice to be part of something like this.
“I had to really serve well and, in the end, I tried to block out the chances I missed, because I missed a lot of chances in the first three sets. But he played terrific tennis and played me really well, and it’s a pity for him, but what a great victory for me anyway.”
Federer has made 10 consecutive grand slam finals, and had not dropped a set in this tournament since the fourth round of the 2005 Australian Open.
But on last night’s form, it will take a major reversal if Federer is to win the Australian Open next Sunday.
While he found the fortitude to win from two sets to one down, his play was a litany of missed chances, unforced errors and uncharacteristic poor decision-making.
He could convert only five of 21 break-points and broke through the half century of unforced errors midway through the fourth set.
Tipsarevic said he was proud to have pushed Federer to the limit.
“I went on court with the idea I would win. I was close. I lost because he was better in the important moments of the match,” he said.
“You have to believe you are going to beat Roger Federer, as stupid as it might sound. If you go out there thinking I will play a good match, make him sweat for his money, it doesn’t work.
“(Fellow Serb Novak Djokovic) gave me some tips and I used them properly. It could have gone my way.”
Remarkably, broadcast host Channel 7 ignored Federer’s clash to feature media darling Ana Ivanovic’s straight-sets win when it started mid-afternoon.
Then after showing its news and an episode of English soap Heartbeat, it picked the clash up on a substantial delay.
What started out as a curiosity — could Tipsarevic win more than the handful of games Federer had given his previous pair of opponents? — quickly turned into a pitched battle.
Instead of wilting as Federer turned the pressure on, the 49th-ranked player looked increasingly at home on centre court.
With Federer serving to keep the first set tie-break alive, Tipsarevic seized on a key mistake with telling effect.
Down a set point, Federer swarmed into the net but chose to let go a forehand crosscourt and it landed on the back left corner, giving Tipsarevic the set.
It set the agenda for what would be no easy walkover but a dogged battle for every point, and every service game.
Tipsarevic saved five break points early in the second set to stay on serve, as Federer dumped forehands, battled failed Hawk-Eye challenges, and grew more flustered and frustrated.
Only in the second-set tie-breaker did he retain his composure, reeling off seven of the eight points to level the contest.
At 5-4 in the third set he had two set points but, incredibly, Tipsarevic broke him two games later and held to take the third set.
Finally when down two sets to one, he began to find his rhythm when he desperately needed it.
Federer’s Australian Open campaign is alive, but only just.

Olga Kurylenko is New Bond Girl, Filming Begins on Bond 22
Production begins today in London on Bond 22, with Daniel Craig reprising the role of Agent 007 and Olga Kurylenko as his leading lady, according to a press release issued today by the film studios.
Previous reports were that Gemma Arterton would be the new Bond girl, but it turns out that she’s actually playing the role of MI6 Agent Fields. It’s Ukranian actress Kurylenko (Hitman) that’s the new Bond girl — the dangerously alluring Camille, who challenges Bond and helps him come to terms with the emotional consequences of Vesper’s betrayal.
French actor Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Munich) will star as the film’s sinister villain Dominic Greene, a leading member of the villainous organization introduced in Casino Royale, who will be a powerful counterpart to Craig’s portrayal of Bond.
Also returning for Bond 22 (the film’s working title) from Royale (the first to star Craig as James Bond) are Judi Dench as M, Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter, and Giancarlo Giannini as Mathis.
MGM and Sony Pictures will share distribution rights worldwide with Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing International distributing the film to theaters worldwide on November 7, 2008. Jay-Z stepping down as Def Jam president
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Universal Music Group said on Monday that rap artist and hip-hop mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is stepping down as president of its Def Jam Records unit, effective by the end of the year.
Carter, 38, has been president of the rap label since 2005, and has signed acts including R&B singers Rihanna and Ne-Yo.
Universal said Carter, a top-selling rapper who performs as Jay-Z, will continue recording for its Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam label. But the company did not give a reason for his decision to quit the executive suite.
“Now it’s time for me to take on new challenges,” he said in a statement. “I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy,” he added.
Carter will focus on his expanding franchise of 40/40 Nightclubs over the next year and other businesses, according to a source familiar with his plans.
Carter regularly tops the lists of richest hip-hop moguls, and was No. 9 on Forbes’ Celebrity 100, the annual roster of the world’s most powerful — and best paid — celebrities, with an estimated compensation of $83 million.
Carter, who has said he was a street hustler growing up in the Marcy public housing project in a tough section of Brooklyn, New York, has sold millions of records and launched an array of media and fashion businesses.

Bale to segue from “Dark Knight” to “Terminator”
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Christian Bale is in negotiations to star in “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins,” the fourth installment of the hit science fiction series.
McG (”Charlie’s Angels,” “We Are Marshall”) is directing the movie, which will be distributed by Warner Bros.
The series, which originated with filmmaker James Cameron and made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star, centered on a robot from the future, when machines wage war against humanity, whose goal was to kill Sarah Connor, the mother of the future leader of the human resistance. As the movies progressed, the son, played by Edward Furlong in “T2″ and Nick Stahl in “T3,” took a more prominent role.
“T4’s” story, by David Campbell Wilson, John Brancato and Michael Ferris, focuses on John Connor, now in his 30s, as he leads what is left of the human race against the machines.
Bale, who appeared this year in “3:10 to Yuma,” “Rescue Dawn” and “I’m Not There,” is currently filming Warner’s “Batman Begins” sequel, “The Dark Knight.”

Sony Music must pay $5m (?2.4m) to a small record company for missing its logo off Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell album, a US court has ruled.
The decision comes after a court settlement in 1998 decided Sony should include the Cleveland International logo on future copies of the record.
But Sony failed to add the logo for more than a year afterwards.
Cleveland founder Steve Popovich said: “I worked too hard for them and made them too much money to get robbed now.”
Sony claimed the logo omission was a mistake that was eventually corrected.
According to court documents, Sony claimed that Mr Popovich had fabricated the logo agreement.
In an original dispute over royalties from the album, Mr Popovich and his former partners were awarded $6.7m (?3.2) by Sony.
Bat Out of Hell, which was originally released in 1979, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, according to court records.
